In this recent interview with CNN anchor Richard Quest, President Kagame (whose aggressive posture usually intimidates his interviewers) looked the most tired we have seen him, and to make matters worst, Quest’s line of questioning exacerbated the president into making a fool of himself on the Rusesabagina issue.

There was an uneasiness to the dynamic of the interview; Quest who believes that this issue “tarnishes (Kagame’s) reputation” must have been given the passive-aggressive welcome reserved for Rusesabagina supporting westerners prior to being received by the president.

When asked about the how of the whole matter, Kagame assured Quest that it had all been “very proper and legal “.  And more perplexing, when asked if the government of Rwanda had been involved in renditioning a man “considered to be a hero by the international community”, Kagame went on a lengthy explanation, as if breaking down a complicated undertaking to a 3-year-old ( FYI, Sir Richard Quest is a barrister)!

If Rusesabagina’s activities have been a threat to Rwanda’s national security, who advises the president on engaging in these laughable self-incriminating media appearances?

Rwanda’s oppressive practices are to blame for how Rusesabagina‘s case continues to be politicized.

One thing was made clear in this interview: Kagame’s arrogance and once admired disdain of the West has become an old unflattering hat. The “I don’t give a damns” of yesterday are no longer befitting of a 60-year-old would-be pan-Africanist. Also, for a leader who branded himself as the “thinker “ behind Rwanda’s post-genocide renaissance, Kagame needs to be poked and offered some bona fide advice: it is truly embarrassing to hear a president misunderstand the universality of democracy so loudly on CNN.

Wouldn’t it have been easier for him to be coached into reminding the world watching of the difficulties in meeting certain democratic requirements for a post-genocide society?!

When Kagame’s sycophants give standing ovations to such pathetic interventions in media, they not only do him a disservice, they also showcase the rogue lack of sophistication that pollutes his regime of vulgarians and social climbers.

Here is hoping that one day, Rwanda’s leaders will attain the level of sophistication that pan-Africanism aspires to.
