A mysterious disappearance is raising serious concern in Huye District, particularly in the Cyarwa neighbourhood. According to multiple witness accounts, a local man named Uwimana Regis was taken from his home in the early hours of 12 July 2021 by men in plainclothes, believed to be agents of the Rwandan police.

Neighbours reported that the men arrived at around 5:00am. Without presenting a warrant or giving any explanation, they removed Regis from his home and drove him away to an unknown location. He has not been seen since.

Regis’s family began searching for him immediately, contacting several police stations across Huye and surrounding areas. Every station denied having him in custody or any knowledge of his arrest.

As days passed, the family found themselves under pressure and intimidation. They were discouraged from continuing their search and warned not to make the police appear suspicious. Officials hinted that Uwimana may have left voluntarily, despite the nature of his disappearance.

However, a reliable source close to the family, whose identity we are withholding for her own safety, told Inyenyeri News that Regis had been under quiet scrutiny by authorities. He was reportedly suspected of holding private views critical of President Kagame. According to this source, there is little doubt that Uwimana was abducted and likely killed by security forces, considering the persistent interest the police had shown in him.

This is sadly not an isolated case. Inyenyeri News has previously reported on many similar incidents in Rwanda, where individuals disappear after being taken by security forces or unidentified agents. While a few resurface after secret detention, many are never seen again, and some are later found dead.

We will continue to investigate this case and others like it. Enforced disappearances have no place in a society that claims to respect human rights and rule of law. The silence from authorities only deepens concerns about systematic repression and the targeting of dissenting voices.
