United Nations, Dec 28 2012 Two helicopters of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were shot by members of the March 23 Movement, official UN sources reported today.

According to a communiqué from the UN contingent reproduced by the world body, on Wednesday two UN choppers faced hostile fire from two towns controlled by the rebel group.

The helicopters were unarmed and were on routine flights some 20 km north of the city of Goma, the capital of North Kivu, when they were attacked twice from the towns of Kibumba and Kanyamahoro.

The UN statement warned the M23 movement that those responsible for the aggressions can be tried as war criminals, and noted that this is the second such attack in December.
