The five were jointly charged with robbing Kenyan Chief Inspector of Police David Machui of the BMW 735 vehicle on August 26 in Utawala, Nairobi. Chief Inspector Machui was driving the vehicle before the gangster’s carjacked him and snatched the car at gunpoint.

Ochan and his accomplices Nelson Mulati, Aggrey Achieng, Andrew Otieno and Godfrey Simon were charged before senior principal magistrate Charles Cherono and denied a charge that they deceitfully handled and undertook the disposal of the motor vehicle registration number KAW 479 Y.

The vehicle with an alternative registration number; GK A 374 E was recovered in Kampala by Ugandan Police after the suspect’s girlfriend decoyed him into a trap at Wandegeya.  It was taken back to Nairobi on Friday.

The Ugandan was ordered to deposit a cash bail of KSh2 million on top of a Kshs 5 Million bond, with two Kenyan sureties pending the hearing of the case on October 14. He has been remanded to Kayole  Kayole police station until Friday.

The Kenyan suspects were released on a KShs 5 million bond, except one of them who was said to have a separate case pending in Kayole, Nairobi.

The suspects are believed to be part of a syndicate with operatives in Kenya, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Uganda.  The syndicate reportedly consists of armed gangsters, corrupt customs officials, car dealers and mechanics, Kenyan police said.
