Rwanda behind Banyamulenge cultural leader kidnap in Uganda
The Banyamulenge traditional leader, Mr Gendarme Rwema, has been kidnapped in western Uganda while travelling to the Democratic Republic of Congo by agents, the victim’s wife Ms Prossy Bonabana, claims are Rwandan operatives.
The Rwanda High Commission in Kampala has, however, denied any involvement in the alleged kidnap.
Speaking to this newspaper at the Monitor Publications Ltd head office in Kampala on Friday, Ms Bonabana said her husband was intercepted in Kisoro District in western Uganda by people belived to be Rwandan operatives and taken to an unknown place.
According to Ms Bonabona, her husband was pulled out of a taxi he had hired in Kisoro Town to drive him to DR Congo.
“He called me on Tuesday at around Six O’clock in the evening and told me he was being kidnapped by Rwandan soldiers before he suddenly hang up. Within 10 minutes, I called back and his phone was off,” Ms Bonabana said.
“Since then, I have not heard from him and nobody has seen him or knows his whereabouts,” she added.
When contacted yesterday morning, Ms Bonabona said there was still no news about her husband’s whereabouts.
The mother of four said she fears for her husband’s life. She said although he was not particularly in good books of the Kigali government, it should not have warranted his kidnap. She said her husband had been living in Uganda for 13 years.
She said when she approached the Rwanda High Commission in Kampala, the Rwandan attaché told her the Rwandan government cannot do such a thing and denied the kidnap was carried out by Rwandan soldiers.
When she contacted the DR Congo embassy, the Congolese attaché gave her unconvincing assurance that the matter would be investigated, but for the meantime the Embassy had no clue about what had happened to her husband.
