Making sense out of MP Bwiza’s resignation
Days after she wrote a letter apologizing to the ruling party for alleged ‘indiscipline’ MP Connie Bwiza Sekamana, who has been in parliament for 15 years tendered in her resignation.
She resigned on Friday last week.
Highly- placed sources told GreatLake Voice that after her resignation, the ruling party outspoken woman was summoned at CID for “certain charges”.
Officially, the MP cited personal reasons for her resignation though sources said MP Bwiza she had been accused by some “hardliners” within the ruling party for carrying out propaganda undermining the state.
Other reports also suggest MP Bwiza had joined the anti third term camp against lifting term limits to allow President Paul Kagame stand again. According to sources, MP together with her confidants were speaking ill about the status quo secretary until their friend ‘betrayed her.
Yet other sources allege they had joined the camp of Lt Rose Kabuye, who has been accused by the ruling party together with her Husband David Kabuye for spreading harmful propaganda against the state.
Efforts to reach Bwiza for a comment were fruitless as her known cell phone number was switched off by press time. She recorded her statement with Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Saturday last week.
Police spokesperson CSP Celestin Twahirwa could neither deny nor confirm whether the MP was summoned to CID for interrogations.
“I am not aware about this,” Twahirwa said. Parliament Speaker Donatile Mukabalisa confirmed to Great Lakes Voice in a telephone interview last night.
“Bwiza tendered in her resignation letter to my office last Friday. We accepted it. She cited her personal reasons.”
She is allegedly opposed to the ruling party ideology and accused of compromising the state by throwing unconcealed statements against party leaders and government officials, according to sources privy to information.
Her husband Sekamana who is in Sudan for UN mission is also accused of speaking ill against government authorities as the wife was pressing to go visit the kids in US but in vain.
Other sources claim, Bwiza is opposed to the idea of amending the constitution to allow Kagame extend his stay in power. But she was doing it silently until recently when she shared the secret with some friends.
September last year, in RPF politburo Odda Gasinzigwa, the RPF commissioner for civil society pointed to indiscipline that has led RPF members to ‘undermine’ Rwanda’s progress. “There are members who were involved in serious crimes against the state, blackmailing the party, spreading rumours and forming groups of negative solidarity,” Gasinzigwa said.
Though her name was not mentioned in a long list but she was actually among the group which Gasinzigwa called undisciplined.
Speaker Mukabalisa said the next step is to ensure she’s replaced.
“We are going to write to the National Electoral Commission informing them about the vacant seat in Parliament and, by procedure, NEC will liaise with the RPF to find a replacement,” Mukabalisa said.
