The Burundi Opposition is preparing to take to the streets until President Nkurunziza drops his desire to stand again despite the fact that the Burundi constitution does not allow him another Term. The Leader of FRODEBU Leonce Ngendakumana has told Voice of America that he is not going to rest until President Nkurunziza drops his plans to stand again.

According to the Burundi Constitution, a President is elected for a term of 5 years renewable only once, President Nkurunziza has served 10 years. The American Ambassador in Bujumbura has told Voice of America that Burundi leaders must respect their own constitution and the Arusha Accord.  “As friends of Burundi we shall do everything we can to advise our friends that they should respect their own constitution and Arusha Accord” she said.

Other leading activists have argued that Burundi is on the edge of political collapse, because of the uncertainty on the future and stability of that country. Rwanda has so far received 4000 refugees from Burundi .They accuse the CNDD/FDD government of not doing enough to protect them from the government militia Imbonerakure which are doing acts of harassment, looting and intimidation.

Political analysts have argued that Burundi current government does not have a clear plan for how to get the country out of this crisis.

Today the streets of Bujumbura were colored with Uniform police who were deployed to prevent demonstrations organized by the oppositions. Mr. Ngendakumana announced that the first anti-government rally will be held soon with or without permission in Bujumbura and other Cities in the country calling on everyone to come and demand that the government steps down after its mandate expires this year.

The Burundi crisis has precipitated tension in the region , with its neighboring Rwanda on the watch because when Burundi sneezes, Rwanda is likely to catch the cold, but the Burundi  opposition has demonstrated to other political groups in the region that democracy is not a monopoly of  the developed world but rather could be found on them Menu of Burundi.
