Burundi Gunmen Shoot Dead Ruling Party Official Near Capital
Gunmen shot dead an official from Burundi’s ruling party, a local administrator said, the latest casualty in violence that’s cost more than 470 lives since the East African nation’s crisis began a year ago.
Focas Bakana, president of a district council, was killed by unidentified armed men who entered his home in Kajaga late Wednesday, Innocent Nibigira said by phone. The town is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the capital, Bujumbura, and near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Landlocked Burundi has been rocked by unrest since April 2015, when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced a bid to stand for a third term, a move criticized by his opponents as unconstitutional.
