The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and other security agencies in North Eastern Uganda are on high alert after an armoury break-in in Teso. Two guns were stolen during the break in.

The break in occurred on December 25 at the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) ammunition store in Katakwi district. Two guns were stolen.

The two weapons are inscribed with serial numbers UG. POL. 564809610 and 50-3688-586 with a total of 84 live rounds.

Capt. Denis Omara, the UPDF 3rd Division spokesperson, confirms the break-in. He says so far the gun owners have been arrested to help security agencies in the investigations.

He identifies the suspects as No. 47830 Police Constables Denis Ocen and Julius Ojur all attached to ASTU headquarters in Katakwi district.

He attributes the break in to guards neglecting their duty and adds that a joint force of the security agencies have been placed on high alert to ensure such a scenario does not occur in the region.

Omara  adds that all military installations have been given additional security in the North Eastern part of Uganda as the world enters the New Year festivities. He appeals to the public to be calm and report all suspicious strangers in their respective areas.

Hassan Juma Nyene, Police Public Relations officer Kyoga region says his office had not been furnished with the information when contacted.

In another development, additional force is set to arrive in Moroto to embark on drills and preparations for the 34th famous, “Tarehe Sita” anniversary celebrations for 2015. So far fool proof security arrangements are being fixed to ensure peaceful celebrations the first of its kind in Karamoja.
