The Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC is considering deploying Elite police units in North Kivu province in attempt to restore law and order.
Julien Paluku, the governor North Kivu Province says they are working with the Kinshasha government to have the cops deployed in Rutshuru and Nyirangongo, which have been under the M23 rebel control for 20 months.
The rebels were defeated by the government forces backed with the UN brigade. Richard Muyej, the Congolese interior Minister says government has already decided to deploy a force of 300 cops from the elite police unit in Rutshuru and Nyiragongo areas. He says the move is aimed at consolidating peace in the areas that have been liberated from the M23 occupation.
Muyej says the presence of the cops will also improve the distribution of food and service delivery to residents. Whether the deployment of the cops will bring the much needed peace to Eastern DRC is a matter of time, since there are still many armed groups operating in the area
