Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is ready to send additional 28 police officers to South Sudan, the BiH Security Ministry said on Thursday.

BiH made the decision in response to the call by the United Nation to urgently send more peacekeepers to South Sudan, it said.

“BiH has offered additional 28 police officers from all police agencies, who have already completed necessary training and volunteered to join the mission (in South Sudan),” said the ministry.

There are currently 35 police officers from BiH in South Sudan while six more will join them on Saturday, local media reported.

It would be the biggest peacekeeping operation by BiH outside the country after the 28 additional police officers reach South Sudan.

More than 1,000 people have been reportedly killed since conflicts erupted in South Sudan more than two weeks ago
