Nyamwasa pushes for relevance amidst persisting rumors around President Kagame’s heath.
In what registers a yet another predictable move in the race for Urugwiro Village’s top job, General Kayumba Nyamwasa makes his case for the umpteenth time. At this point though, he is preaching to the choir. If there is one that still cares about the reasons for his falling out with Kagame.
Carefully listing the root causes for his desertion to promote himself as the just man Rwandans- military and civilian- know he isn’t, this time, General Nyamwasa inadvertently sheds real light on what really went wrong between him and the man he once considered to be his friend.
In other words, Kagame became richer than the state and refused Nyamwasa his share of the cake, after everything he had done for him. General Nyamwasa was stiffed of his “due”. His loyalty was rewarded with blatant disrespect, his sacrifice for the RPF cause trivialized. Who wouldn’t be bitter?
In Kagame’s Rwanda, powersharing is inconceivable. Whatever influence anyone under him exerts is not earned but given by Kagame.
General Nyamwasa got so close to the source of power that he forgot one must never even dream of outshining the master. He was not to be the only one. Not long after him, “Super Minister” James Musoni fell into the same trap. But he quickly got himself back in line, ate humble pie, and was punished/rewarded with a demotion-Ambassadorship to Zimbabwe.
General Kagame’s ill health rumors are becoming harder to dismiss than the death hoaxes we have become used to. Soon, he may find it necessary to say something about it. Rwandans are worried. We are finding it hard to attribute his recluseness and rare appearances to the Covid-19 pandemic. After all, we are a people of matiku, we love a good story. All over social media, there are whispers of a frightening word: cancer. Whispers of would-be foreign physicians at the president’s bedside and whispers of allegedly growing anxiety within his entourage over who it will fall on to take over.
Could it be that frustrated in its efforts to put an end to his rule, Kagame’s opposition has resolved to imagine his demise through this incurable disease?
However notable the relentless efforts to snatch victory from jaws of defeat, General Nyamwasa’s mention of crystal ventures’ fortune is quite sobering. It is quietly sinking in that it is crystal venture’s fortune and more importantly, who will gain control over it that will dictate the terms of post-Kagame Rwanda. Everything else might be trivial to that; even the French understand this and are putting their money on it through the infamous “Groupe Duval”. ( A possible trojan horse that greed and impending economic collapse do not allow us to see coming!)
In any case, cancer or no cancer, dictator, despot, or hero, it is not going to be easy to find Rwanda a man to fill Kagame’s shoes. Passions are high between cries for justice, reckoning, and fanatical reverence. It may very well fall on a Rwandan woman to reconcile us. Our men may not have the long-suffering patience it will take.
