According to murmurs emanating from RPF’s newly forming round table, Rwanda’s presidency is the next step for her most prominent diplomat.
All agree that Dr. Vincent Biruta’s outstanding acuity is no match for Mushikiwabo’s political charisma now propelled to the statesmen’s league by the Secretary Generalship of the IOF.
Mushikiwabo’s ease on the red carpet comes with crucial political capital and savviness in her acquired ability to maneuver the “higher-end” intrigues of power. Gone are days when she was dubbed Kagame’s raging b* by her jealous acolytes; thanks to the French (the irony!), she is now an iron lady in her own right.

lt would, of course, be far-fetched to think that she will be assuming the supreme commander’s role in its full capacity, but the Boss, whose age and health have finally humbled into slowing down will soon need someone standing in for him here and there. However driven, he can no longer do it all alone. After RPF’s victory, seizing and consolidating power, it is time to strategize on its survival and continuity.

Mushikiwabo will take the mantle of “visibility” for Kagame’s Rwanda to the next level. Adding that modern gender touch prized by western liberals to it.

She has mastered the know-how of a seasoned diplomat, which will come in handy when Rwanda’s loan sharks come collecting. It will be difficult to pin all the failures of our “economic miracle” on COVID-19, it is no secret that our “good-willed” financiers are only interested in the pressing deadlines on returns to their investments.

Those vying for a post-Kagame popular revolution may be in for big a disappointment. Power will remain consolidated within this “round table ” that sits key trusted individuals of his choosing ” who understand his “vision” “, are ready to selflessly work together as a team to enforce it and to defend his personal interests with their lives.

It has taken Kagame over 25 years amidst paranoid sidelining, character assassinations, and unfair imprisonments to put together this “A-Team” of “tried and true” loyal who understand what is expected of them be-it an ornamental presidency or any other “duty ” that requires checking one’s ego at the door or learning to accommodate another’s vices for the greater good of the “team”.

As the saying goes, Rome was not built in one day. Congratulations to Mushikiwabo. Here is hoping she will be a stepping stone to the journey of Rwanda’s transformation from post-revolutionary kleptocracy to genuine technocracy and maybe true democracy one day.

Noble Marara.
