FDC Polls: Power Blackout Sparks Vote Rigging Fears at Namboole
The power went off a few minutes after 7pm, as the voting carried on.
Shortly before the outage, some concerns had already emerged about possible malpractices and some candidates’ supporters were seen taking precautions.
The FDC Secretary General Nathan Nandala Mafabi after nightfall began chasing away journalists and other delegates who were surrounding the voting area.
He then commanded his team to seal off the polling area.
The SG was overheard saying that some unscrupulous people were getting closer to the polling area to steal the votes.
Later on power went off and pandemonium broke out. There were loud chants amongst some delegates that vote rigging was ongoing in the darkness.
Some were heard calling for a rerun.
Amidst the black out, delegates who were at the polling point were not allowed to leave until power returned.
Normal voting however, resumed as soon as the lights came back on.
