Dinesh,I visit your blog ocassionally and enjoy your atreclis. Here you say So the original word meaning “braveâ€, uttered by Indians who are brazenly insensitive to other people’s self-respect and identity, becomes synonymous with insult and humiliation. Your comment brings up several questions. Are you suggesting that the people who mispronounce Bahadur’s name are doing so intentionally knowing that badar means monkey in Nepali? Nothing in your article suggests that you met with any of the people who pronounced his name in that way and asked them if they knew the meaning. Given the incidents Bahadur mentioned, it appears that he is quite capable of gently correcting the the people who mispronouonce his name. But it doesn’t look like he did that and you didn’t ask him that either.I’m sure you know that Bahadur is a common name in North India. I hardly think people would go out of their way to mispronounce the name merely to spite a chowkidar. More likely that it is simply how they pronounce it. Did you investigate? Doesn’t appear like it.My point, my friend, in all this is to point out to you that you appear to be quick to interpret some behavior in India in hostile terms, quick to condemn Indians in general for something without looking for more obvious and logical explanations. It is a trait that is found in (some) people in the smaller states surrounding India in my experience. As a journalist, you need to step back and look at events and incidents a little more logically and dispassionately. You will do your readers, and your country, better service.
