Former International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo has attended high level talks held in London between leading opposition presidential aspirants Kizza Besigye and Amama Mbabazi, Red Pepper online reports.

The talks geared at uniting the two opposition figures were mediated by former United Nations General Secretary Kofi Annan.

In a press statement signed by Amama Mbabazi and Kizza Besigye released by The Democratic Alliance (TDA) yesterday, the two principal s said that they had made substantial progress.

“We have held a two-day meeting in London, UK to continue the discussions previously held in Nairobi, Kenya…We have made substantial progress in preparations for the 2016 general elections in Uganda,” the statement read in part.

Adding; “We will subsequently report to our respective political structures so as to complete the arrangements guaranteeing our success in the presidential elections.”

Earlier this month, Kenyan opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga met with Besigye and Mbabazi in Nairobi, reportedly urging the two men to put aside their personal ambitions in favor of unity.

Last week Foreign Policy, a leading United States Magazine reported that “Other international leaders within and outside Africa have also reportedly volunteered their services as mediators, helping to hammer out a plan for a credible, democratic, and peaceful transition of power in Uganda that brings together leading figures from both the opposition and the governing party.”
