Since the news of his passing broke, social media has been inundated with messages of condolences and wishes of peaceful rest and anecdotes of Musemakweli’s chivalry and generosity shrouding the dark side of the general few people are privy to.

Those who know about General Musemakweli’s infamous crimes seem to have conveniently chosen to ignore them.

General Musemakweli’s death is a reminder of the judgment that awaits us all. He has eluded man’s justice for his role in the murders of our commanders in conspiracy with General Richard Rutatina ( Kayumba Nyamwasa’s brother in law), but he did not elude justice from above. Together (and no doubt in collusion with others whose names we may never know) Musemakweli and Rutatina are responsible for the deaths of Afande Kayitare Vedaste Intare Batinya, Afande Karangwa, Colonel Ndugute, Afande Kizza, and many others killed by poison through lethal injections.

As much as Rwandan tradition forbids us to speak ill of the dead, we cannot forget nor keep silent about our commanders who lost their lives at the hands of General Musemakweli. Let those who eulogized him, regretting the passing of a “gentleman”, remember that he was also another tool in a system that caused a lot of grief to many innocent Rwandans.

Impunity may continue to thrive in Rwanda but the good news is that God’s justice will also continue to settle the scores of the absent.
