Letter to my brother in bondage
Dear Brother ,
Our lives have taken different directions but our fates are more intertwined than ever.
We did not choose to be born Rwandan , it was assigned to us by birth along with the heavy duty of having to honor our motherland with courage at every challenge we would face.
We have sacrificed so much , we have lost so many friends , we have endured betrayal and injustice but we have never betrayed our conscience.
We did not set off with the intention of making enemies , but we have made enemies because we decided to commit no crime against our conscience .
Dear Brother ,even though we are far apart with you there and me all the way here ,it warms my heart that you still remember the promise we made to our country. We committed ourselves to tell her truth . We pledged our lives to her.
To this day ,we can proudly say that we have not failed our country.
You asked me if the way to get along was to go along with those in power and of course my answer is no . We cannot go along with what we know is wrong in every way .
And we cannot sit back and expect things to change all by themselves.
We must arm ourselves with courage again and go confront the tyrant.
I am reminded of this photo of Mandela with that quote that you like, I always remember it at times like these .
We shall overcome . Perhaps we will die on this front , but if we do, we will have died trying to open the door to the promise land,to the Rwanda so many died for before us .
I cannot forget these powerful words by Jack Canfield : “Everything you want is on the other side of fear.”
Let us therefore be brave and daring ! Rwanda deserves no less than our fortitude.
Noble Marara
