The directors, Arinaitwe Rugyendo, James Mujuni, Johnson Byarabaha, Patrick Mugumya, and Richard Tusiime were arrested on Tuesday evening along with editors Ben Byarabaha, Richard Kintu and Francis Tumusiime and detained at the Nalufenya Detention Centre.

This followed a story in the company’s daily the Red Peppers, which suggested that President Yoweri Museveni was trying to overthrow the regime in neighboring Rwanda.

The officials were yesterday made to record a charge and caution statement by the police at the company offices in Namanve.

According to one of the company lawyers Denis Nyombi, the charge and caution statement entailed counts of Treason, Annoying the Person of (Gen Salim) Saleh and Gen. Henry Tumukunde, Offensive Communication as well as Publication of a story that’s prejudicial to the security of the country.

Council Nyombi told us that four of the five directors recorded the charge and caution statement  — where the suspect is read the accusation brought against them and asked whether or not they understand them — while one recorded the normal police statement.

After recording the charge and caution statements, these were driven back to Nalufenya.

The lawyer informed us that among the things they will be challenging in court is the manner in which these statements were recorded.

Meanwhile police officers for the second day running ransacked the homes of the arrested suspects as well as the offices of the company for evidence.
