DRC’s opposition leader Katumbi enters South Africa for medical treatment.

Democratic Republic of Congo presidential hopeful Moise Katumbi, who has a warrant issued for his arrest, has arrived in South Africa for medical treatment, according to an AFP report published on the website of News 24.

Katumbi left Lubumbashi on a plane on Friday evening, after an ambulance drove him to the waiting aircraft, AFP reported, citing an aide.

A medical plane from Lubumbashi arrived in Johannesburg on Friday night, News 24 reported, citing Peter Botha, an operations controller at the city’s Lanseria airport. He didn’t say who was on board.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s government issued an arrest warrant for Katumbi on May 20 on charges that he recruited mercenaries, escalating a political crisis in the country as it prepares for elections in six months.
