Four people were seriously injured Wednesday night in a grenade explosion at Mbuye in Muramvya province, some 60 km east of the Burundian capital Bujumbura, a local official said on Thursday.

“Unidentified persons detonated a grenade inside a house at night, seriously injuring three women and one child. The reason behind the attack is still being investigated,” Jean Berchmans Vyukusenge, administrator of Mbuye commune, told Xinhua by phone.

According to him, the victims were evacuated to Muramvya hospital as most of them were in “critical” conditions.

Meanwhile, three persons were injured Wednesday night and Thursday morning in separate incidents in Bujumbura.

Witnesses told Xinhua that one of the victims is a bus conductor who was reportedly caught by two bullets on Thursday morning by an army officer at Carama.

“The conductor was going to work when he was intercepted by a drunken army officer who has killed at least three persons here in Carama during the recent days due to his drunkenness. The criminal also grabbed the victim’s phone and 20,000 Burundi francs (about 13 U.S. dollars) before shooting him,” said the witnesses.

They said that the army officer was later arrested.

On Wednesday night, a soccer player was injured on the leg after he was shot by unidentified people at Buyenzi and another person was also injured after he was shot by unidentified gunmen at Musaga.
