Army spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda

Uganda’s army, the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) and police force are ready to deal with any terror threat against the country, UPDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda has said.

He revealed this on Thursday afternoon via micro-blogging site Twitter.

“Ugandan troops, police are on the alert to deal with the terror threat” Ankunda tweeted. He added that UPDF and police have been deployed in Kampala, Entebbe to deal with terror threat.

This follows reports that terrorists are hiding in the Ugandan capital Kampala. The Ugandan army and police’s anti-terror squad on Thursday morning deployed in the capital to avert any such threat.

There have also been unconfirmed reports that the US Embassy in Uganda had warned of a specific threat of an attack on Entebbe International Airport by terrorists on Thursday tonight.

Ankunda called for vigilance from the public saying “People must be vigilant in the face of this threat, report any suspicious individuals seen in their areas”

This development follows a series of terror threats issued by elements vowing to attack the east African country.

Policemen and UPDF soldiers have been heavily deployed downtown.

It should be recalled that in 2010, Somali Islamist group Al-Shabaab suicide bombers hit Kampala on July 11, 2010 killing 74 people watching the World Cup final at two different venues.

The bombs went off simultaneously on July 11th 2010 at Kyadondo rugby grounds along Jinja road and the Ethiopian Village restaurant in Kabalagala.

Uganda contributes the lions share of troops under the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) that are currently battling the AL Qaeda linked Islamist group.
