Kayihura Inspects Parliament Security After ‘Pig Protest’
Uganda’s Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura has today inspected security at Parliament following last week’s piglets’ demonstration at the House.
On Tuesday last week, two youths, Norman Tumuhimbise and Robert Mayanja, beat security at the main gate of parliament and sneaked in two yellow painted piglets in a demonstration against youth unemployment and rampant corruption in the country.
During today’s inspection Kayihura was accompanied by the Commander Kampala Metropolitan Andrew Felix Kaweesi and other police officers. General Kayihura explained that the main purpose of inspecting security at parliament was to audit and see where gaps are and to strengthen security both at Parliament Building and president’s office against terrorism.
He said that he had cited gaps in security at Parliament but that they are to evaluate and see how quickly they can take more measures in ensuring more security.
On the pig demonstration at parliament, Kayihura noted that it was very unfortunate and showed that there was a gap in security.
Kayihura said that the police officers who were manning the main gate at Parliament when pigs were smuggled in are supposed to appear before the police disciplinary court and then be charged. He also noted that security at Parliament is to be beefed up following the incident.
Meanwhile enforcement of new security measures and guidelines has already taken effect at Parliament. Since yesterday, there have been intensified checkups for Members of Parliament, parliamentary staff and visitors.
As the measures took effect, long queues were visible at the main gate of parliament where aregistration book has since been put up for all persons. Visitors are also required to list theirphone contacts, vehicle number plates and any properties in their possession.
